An eight-year-old was killed in an apparent ATV accident Sunday near Forest Lakes. Coconino County Sheriff’s officials were notified at around 1 p.m. that an eight-year-old child was missing from a campsite near Bear Canyon Lake. As deputies, DPS state troopers and Forest Service personnel were responding, another report was made that the child was found and had been involved in an accident. An investigation revealed the Mesa area family was camping near the lake when the child reportedly took the family’s ATV. A short time after making the first report, they found the child down a steep embankment. The child was not breathing and was transported by a private vehicle to a location where they were met by medical personnel. The child was pronounced dead on the scene. An investigation into the death is ongoing. The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office is reminding the public to wear recommended safety equipment and follow all applicable safe and federal laws regarding the safe use of ATV’s while recreating.
