Cottonwood Couple Say A Mountain Lion Snatched Their Dog In Oak Creek Canyon Wednesday, But Was Later Found Safe With Very Minor Injuries

A Cottonwood couple reportedly endured a mountain lion scare while hiking Oak Creek Canyon Wednesday near the Manzanita Campground. During their hike they say their Shepherd-Husky mix was drug off the trail by the neck by a mountain lion. Steve and Tammy Clyse say the event was something they will never forget. They had taken the dog off a rope they had, just to take a quick picture and that’s when everything changed. Steve says their dog Karley reacted to something. He says “she was hunched over in this weird position and then faster than a blink, something grabbed my dog and pulled her and she didn’t make a sound.” He adds he told Tammy, “something’s got our dog, something’s got our dog.” Steve says Karley “must of gotten loose for just a second because she made a bark, like a grumble, and then that was it.” He adds, “then when I turned I could see it, this big, huge cat had our dog look like a puppy in its mouth and it looked right at me and then the next thing you know it ran off.” They reported the incident and told other hikers and campers to keep their eyes open for Karley. After heading back to Cottonwood thinking the worst had happened, they received a call from a nearby camper saying they heard a dog crying off the trail. The camper attempted to get closer to the dog, but it was too skittish to approach. The camper then called law enforcement, who helped the couple locate Karley. The couple went back to Oak Creek Canyon with only the flashlight of a deputy to light the path. They found Karley cold, wet, and shivering near the parking lot where they had parked originally. Karley sustained extremely mild injuries with only a bite on the base of her tail and minor lacerations to her back leg. Steve and Tammy say they are extremely happy to have their dog back and in healthy condition. Tammy says, “We have a dog that defied all the odds. I’m checking to see where I can order a Superhero cape for her!” They remind hikers, campers and pet owners to be cautious while hiking and keep an eye out for wildlife. Wildlife officials say they haven’t found the mountain lion that was in the area, but say they are not uncommon to Oak Creek Canyon.
