Cornville Man Arrested In Connection With The Death Of A 22-Year-Old Man Saturday

A Cornville man is in custody in connection with the apparent beating of a 22-year-old male Saturday. Yavapai County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the 11-thousand block of East Clatterback Drive in Cornville at around 6:30 p.m. regarding an unconscious man with a severe head injury. When deputies arrived they tended to the Jesse Rayfield of Cornville to try and stop the bleeding before paramedics arrived. Deputies noticed a large amount of blood inside a travel trailer where the Rayfield was, along with a bloodied hammer at his feet. He was transferred to Verde Valley Medical Center, and was then taken to Flagstaff Medical Center where he died Wednesday morning. Deputies talked to the person who found the Rayfield, who told them 23-year-old David Shultz admitted to hitting the victim with a bat. The person, who is a relative of Shultz, went to the victim’s home where they found him on the floor. Deputies went to a trailer where Shultz was thought to be inside. After calling his name, Shultz came to the door and was taken into custody without incident. He is being held in the Camp Verde Detention Center without bond.
