Coconino High School may soon have its new varsity head football coach. Administrators at Coconino have selected former Bradshaw Mountain offensive coordinator Gary Cook as the next leader of the Panthers. Cook coached under late Bears head coach Chuck Moeller from 2017 to 2019, and spent one season as an assistant under current Bradshaw Mountain head coach Bob Young, before leaving the staff in 2020. Under Moeller, Cook’s offenses averaged 31 points a game. Cook also has head coaching experience, as he was the former head football coach at Shadow Mountain and North high schools. He also spent four seasons as head coach at Phoenix College. Cook replaces Mike Lapsley, who spent four years as head coach of the Panthers. He resigned earlier this year and leaves Coconino with a 26-and-13 record. Cook’s selection as Coconino head coach will be discussed and voted upon at a future Flagstaff Unified School District Governing Board meeting.
