Now that there’s snow on the ground, State Forestry fire managers have begun pile burns southwest of Flagstaff. Crews started ignitions on piles seven miles southwest of Flagstaff in the Mill Park area Wednesday. Fire managers are trying to complete 400 acres a day over the next week. Smoke is expected to move toward Sycamore Canyon and is expected to settle into the burn area at night. The Coconino National Forest conducted two pile burns today, one near the Flagstaff Ranger Station and the other down Lake Mary Road. Piles of forest debris are made through the year and burned in the winter, when temperatures are lower and snow is on the ground to prevent spread.
