An inmate at the Coconino County Jail died in a cell Tuesday evening. Detention staff were alerted of Gibson Benally feeling dizzy and out of breath at around 4:45 p.m., where they transported him to a medical cell for further evaluation. Benally was transferred at 5:33 p.m. and was being housed in a cell alone when he was found unresponsive. Authorities say CPR and an AED was performed until Flagstaff Fire Department and Guardian Medical Transport could take over. Benally was pronounced dead at 6:39 p.m. No foul play is suspected and it is believed Benally died from a medical event. The incident is currently under investigation.
