Coconino County Sheriff’s search and rescue crews rescued an injured hiker this past Saturday in the Fossil Creek Wilderness area. CCSO received a 911 call at around 1:45 p.m. regarding a canyoneering accident at Horsetank Wash. A 56-year-old Phoenix man suffered injuries, including a compound arm fracture, when he fell about 60 feet as he began to rappel. Rescue crews had help from the DPS helicopter and a Gila County Sheriff’s search and rescue coordinator who was in the area. A rescue specialist rappelled from the helicopter to the injured man and short-hauled him to a nearby landing zone near State Route 260. The injured person was taken to Payson Medical Center for treatment. Authorities remind everyone that canyoneering can be dangerous. Familiarize yourself with the area, be prepared to provide medical first aid to others due to long response times, get training, travel with experienced people, be aware of the weather and use good judgement.
