CCSO Issues 12 Illegal Campfire Citations On A Busy Holiday Weekend For Deputies

Coconino County Sheriff’s deputies had a busy Memorial Day weekend. For the period of May 27th through May 30th, deputies responded to nearly 11-hundred calls for service. Deputies responded to 27 reports of violation of fire restrictions. However, the reports resulted in 12 citations because most of the 27 reports were unfounded and many of the calls investigated were found to be propane fires, which are legal under Stage Two fire restrictions. Deputies also contacted 80 Off Highway Vehicles over the weekend, which resulted in 12 OHV related citations. There were five OHV related crashes. Also the Bear Fire started Monday, which burned 15 acres north of Bear Canyon Lake. Officials say several dispersed campfires were found near the fire’s start. Deputies also made 164 traffic stops during the holiday weekend, resulting in ten arrests and 66 citations. Deputies responded to nearly 400 more calls for service than the weekend before.
