A 65-year-old man was fatally shot by Yavapai County Sheriff’s deputies after the man opened fire after a two-hour standoff Friday night in Prescott Valley. Deputies were called to a home near the 11-thousand-600 block of Hawthorne Lane at around 9:45 p.m. after the man fired several shots toward the home. Deputies were told the man was depressed over ongoing family issues. When deputies arrived, they secured the area and learned the man was hiding on the property. SWAT and crisis negotiators were called to the scene, but were unsuccessful as the man threatened to kill deputies and commit “suicide by cop.” At around 11 p.m. the man opened fire on deputies from a shed. Just before midnight, the man opened fire again, this time a SWAT deputy returned fire, hitting the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No deputies were injured in either exchange. The man’s identity has not been released and a DPS Officer-Involved Shooting Team is investigating the incident.
