A fatal, one vehicle, accident caused a long backup and detours for several hours on southbound Interstate-17 Sunday afternoon. The accident took place at around 1:15 p.m. on the highway at Cordes Junction. DPS says the vehicle drifted off right, onto the depressed shoulder. That’s when the driver steered back left and the vehicle lost control. The passenger side of the vehicle hit a guardrail. The impact sent the guardrail through the front passenger compartment, hitting both occupants. DPS says the driver was 16-years-old and was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger was airlifted to a Phoenix area hospital for treatment. No other vehicles were involved. The area was cleared and traffic flow resumed to normal later in the evening.
