The five people who were stuck at the bottom of Grand Canyon Caverns in Peach Springs, east of Kingman, have been rescued. Coconino County Sheriff’s officials say the group was 21 stories underground and was stuck between 24-and-30 hours. They were rescued by a Coconino County Search and Rescue team, which included members of the Flagstaff Fire Department, Monday night at 6 p.m. The team used a tripod apparatus with a rope to hoist the people up 210 feet to the surface. There were no injuries. The group was at the bottom since Sunday, when an elevator malfunctioned. Attempts to fix the elevator earlier Monday were unsuccessful. Despite being trapped, the group was safe and had food while they waited to be rescued as there is a hotel and restaurant at the bottom of the cavern.
