The Flagstaff City Council discussed the future of affordable housing and the directing of three parcels of land to do it on. The parcels are in the 17-hundred block of East Sixth Avenue, the 35-hundred block of North Fort Valley Road and in the 31-hundred block of North West Street. Plans for housing will run through city staff, as most of the properties are zoned commercial and will have to be rezoned. Housing will likely be one-to-two bedrooms, as the market is thin on those types of houses. Two councilmembers wanted the heights restricted to two-stories, but council decided to allow developers to set the limit to city code standards. First RFPs on the project should go out in March of 2018. Council members talked about the plan during the work session at the Hal Jensen Recreation Center. They are expected to take up the plan again at a future council meeting.
