Coconino National Forest fire managers ignited two large prescribed burns Thursday. The Peaks Project burn is taking place about 15 miles north of Flagstaff, just northeast of the San Francisco Peaks. The burn is divided into seven separate sections and will burn just over 41-hundred acres total and last three-to-ten days. Smoke should move to the northeast and could settle into areas along Highway 89 as well as Deadman Wash. The 13-thousand acre Upper Beaver Creek Project is also underway and is expected to last possibly until May 15th. The area is about 15 miles northwest of Clints Well near Stoneman Lake. This burn is divided into 15 separate sections. Smoke could settle into areas such as Rattlesnake Canyon and Village of Oak Creek, Stoneman Lake and homes near Double Cabin Park. Burns days always depend on weather and wind conditions. Prescribed burns are used for forest health and restoration and to protect homes and wildlife in nearby areas.
