One of the oldest Fourth of July parades in the state has been canceled. The Prescott Rodeo Committee made the decision to cancel the 2020 Prescott Frontier Days Rodeo Parade over the latest concerns regarding COVID-19. Mayor Greg Mengarelli tells Magic 99.1 the reason for the decision is “public health is the number one priority and we don’t want to have a whole bunch of people in the downtown area with this virus being widespread in the community.” The mayor also said the committee has decided to cancel the rodeo dance. He also said fireworks over Watson Lake is still on, however events leading up to the fireworks show have also been canceled. The Prescott Rodeo is still a go, but with protocols in place for crowds and surrounding activity. In regards to wearing face coverings, Mengarelli says wearing a mask is “strongly encouraged,” even though the city is not mandating it. He says “everytime I go into a store I wear it, it’s just the smart thing to do and that’s why I ask everyone to do the same thing.” The rodeo parade typically draws over 45-thousand people.
