Flagstaff City Council

The Flagstaff City Council met Tuesday to discuss an amendment to the city code to establish local parameters in connection with the statewide, voter-approved, “Smart and Safe Arizona Act,” which legalizes recreational marijuana. The “Act” allows the possession of up to one ounce of marijuana, by single individual aged 21 years or older. However, the use of marijuana would be banned on public property, and also in cars, boats, aircraft, and other vehicles. Several councilmembers discussed concerns about various aspects of the ordinance, with Mayor Paul Deasy mentioning a fear of monopolies, and suggesting that those licensed in other Arizona cities to sell recreational marijuana be prohibited from owning dispensaries in Flagstaff. The council ultimately voted to read ordinance, but will officially vote on whether or not to adopt it on March 16th. In addition, the council also decided to move forward with an agenda item requested by councilmember Regina Salas to create a new code of ethics for the Mayor and City Council.
