The Flagstaff City Council heard an update on COVID-19 and discussed a new housing zone for Flagstaff at their Tuesday work session. City data showed a slight uptick in the number of hospitalizations, but a decrease in cases, and no deaths since the previous update. Many councilmembers supported moving toward full capacity at outdoor events by July 1st, but Mayor Paul Deasy and councilmember Austin Aslan urged a cautious approach and encouraged mask requirements where allowable. In addition, the council discussed a new type of Neighborhood Community Commercial zoning. The proposed NCC zone would be exactly like a Community Commercial zone, but would reduce maximum building heights from 60 feet to 45 feet. Comprehensive Planning Manager Sara Dechter explained that this lower building height would reduce risk of large building footprints that could lead to gentrification in the North End, Southside and Sunnyside Neighborhoods. The council supported moving the item forward.
