President Biden yesterday declared that a major disaster exists for the Navajo Nation and ordered federal assistance to supplement the tribe’s efforts in the areas affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The declaration immediately provides federal funding to the Navajo Nation and certain private nonprofit organizations for emergency protective measures, including direct federal assistance, for the entire tribe impacted by COVID-19. There’s no word on what assistance will be made available to the tribe, but the effort will be directed by federal coordinating officer Tammy Littrell, who was named by FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security to coordinate federal operations on the reservation.
