A man convicted of a gruesome double murder on the Navajo Nation in 2001, lost a bid Thursday to push back his execution date. Thirty-eight year old Lezmond Mitchell will be executed by lethal injection August 28th at a federal prison in Indiana after he was found guilty of the beating and stabbing deaths of 63-year-old Alycie Sim and her nine-year-old granddaughter near Sawmill. Earlier this week Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez sent a letter to President Trump asking him to commute Mitchell’s sentence to life in prison. The president has not responded to the request. Mitchell was convicted on eleven counts, including two counts of first-degree murder. He is the only Native American man currently on death row.
