National Navajo Code Talkers Day will be a legal state holiday in Arizona every year going forward. Governor Doug Ducey signed legislation making it official Monday. If August 14th falls on another other day than Sunday, the following Sunday will be observed as the holiday. “The Navajo Code Talkers are American heroes,” said Governor Ducey. “They assisted on every major operation involving the U.S. Marines in the Pacific theatre, using their native language to come up with an unbreakable code. More than 400 Code Talkers answered the call to serve our nation, and Arizona is grateful for their dedication to protecting our nation.” Senator Jamescita Peshlakai sponsored the Senate bill that makes the day a state holiday. Navajo Code Talkers Day was established by presidential proclamation by President Reagan in 1982. Currently, there are only four members of the Code Talkers who are alive. Thomas H. Begay, John Kinsel Junior, Samuel Sandoval and former Navajo Nation President Peter McDonald are all that remain from the group of heroes.
