Senator Martha McSally and Congressman Tom O’Halleran have teamed up on a bill that would improve the Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument near Flagstaff. The bipartisan bill would transfer ownership of 97 acres from the National Forest Service to the National Park Service. The land is home to monument offices and facilities. McSally says she wants to cut back on the red tape saying, “my bill will improve the visitor experience by streamlining management of Monument facilities and reducing bureaucratic barriers between the National Park Service and the Forest Service.” The National Park Service currently operates this area under an “Interagency Agreement” where any repairs, maintenance or ground disturbance needs approval by the Forest Service.
