The Flagstaff Unified School District Governing Board voted on several items related to a return to in person learning starting with the first group of students returning March 22nd, the second going back the following week. This model would include in person instruction, with the option for remote learning still available, and passed with a four-to-one vote. Board member Carol Haden said she voted to approve the measure because of concerns from community members over the mental health of students, but said it is the Flagstaff community’s responsibility to continue social distancing so that COVID-19 cases can decrease. A parental survey revealed 73-percent of parents wanted a return to in-person instruction. The March 22nd return date is still subject to change based on how cases fluctuate in the coming weeks. In addition, the FUSD Board also approved a mitigation plan for preventing the spread of COVID-19, and what to do if students or teachers become sick. More information about the mitigation plan can be found at fusd1.org/safelyforward.
