A Flagstaff teacher has been named a Top Five Finalist for the Arizona Education Association’s Teacher Of The Year. Jillian Hernandez is a fifth-grade teacher at Puente de Hozho and was named one of the finalists. She submitted a platform that focuses on social justice and meeting the needs of diverse populations across Arizona. Hernandez says “education can and should be an act of social justice.“ She adds, “If education does not allow for empowerment and action, then we have missed the point.” Hernandez will find out on October 23rd is she is named AEA Teacher of the Year.
