The Flagstaff Police Department is mourning the loss of one of their own. Authorities say Officer Jarrett Shughart was found at his home Saturday, with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officers arrived at his home on a welfare check and found his body. There were no other people at home at the time of the discovery. Flagstaff Police say Officer Shughart was 31-years-old and served the community with the Flagstaff Police Department since October 13th, 2014. During that time, Officer Shughart served as a Field Training Officer and was currently assigned in a light-duty capacity due to a work-related injury. Mayor Coral Evans says “My heart goes out to his loved ones and colleagues. I am thankful for our police officers and grateful for their service and commitment to our community. God bless them and their families.” At this time the family requests privacy and funeral arrangements are unknown at this time. This is the second Flagstaff Police officer to take his own life in over two years. Officer Daniel Beckwith was found dead last year in Mesa, just over a year after he was involved in an officer-involved fatal shooting where an elderly man wouldn’t stop waiving a gun. The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office is investigating Shughart’s death. We at Great Circle Media extend our condolences to the family of Officer Shughart, the Flagstaff Police Department and all who knew him.
