Both the Flagstaff Eagles and Coconino Panthers football teams began their season Friday night with two close wins at Cromer Stadium at Coconino High School. The first game saw the Flagstaff Eagles capitalize on a scramble by quarterback Morgan Bewley for a touchdown in the third quarter and that’s all they needed to knock off Mingus 7-0. The Eagles lost senior running back Luis Jaramillo in the first half with a concussion and his status for next week is unknown. Both teams combined for six turnovers in the first half. Flagstaff will travel to Bradshaw Mountain to take on the Bears in Prescott Valley next Friday. The night game pitted Coconino against Marcos de Niza. Both teams went back and forth and couldn’t decide the game after four quarters and it went to overtime tied at 22. Zach Bennett rushed for a touchdown as Coconino took a 29-22 lead. The Padres struck back and scored and then went for two. Coconino stopped the Padres on the one yard line to hold on to win 29-28. Bennett had 119 yards on 21 carries and quarterback Ryan Seery was 5-of-8 for 133 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Coconino travels to Kingman next Friday to take on the Lee Williams Volunteers, who beat Prescott Friday night 31-15.
