The Navajo Nation is confirming the first case of the COVID-19 U.K. variant on tribal land. Health officials said Tuesday the confirmed case came from a sample that was collected in the western portion of the reservation. The U.K. variant is currently the most dominant of all the variants in the U.S. President Jonathan Nez says “we shouldn’t panic, but we should be informed about this new development. There is still much to be learned about this particular variant, but the evidence so far indicates that the UK variant is more contagious and is more severe in some cases.” Health officials say the person who tested positive for the variant, received both shots of COVID vaccine over a month prior to testing positive. The person was hospitalized, but is recovering at home. Vaccines don’t guarantee the person won’t become infected with the virus, but it does help reduce the severity of COVID if you become infected and test positive. Tribal health officials say contract tracing showed no further spread of the variant beyond the positive case. Around 38-percent of people on the Navajo Nation have been fully vaccinated.
