The Department of Public Safety is closing the agency’s Northern Communication Center, which means the possible loss of dispatcher jobs in Flagstaff. DPS officials say the decision to close the center was made by Director Frank Milstead about two weeks ago and they are in the first phase of the shutdown. Officials say the reason behind the closure is because the center was “unable to maintain adequate staffing, stemming from attrition and recruitment challenges.” The dispatch center covers calls from the eastern border to the western border, as well as the majority of the Navajo, Hopi and White Mountain Apache reservations along with Yavapai and Gila counties. Calls will be handled by the call center in Phoenix. DPS says the 15 dispatchers in Flagstaff will be able to transfer to Phoenix at the conclusion of the center’s operations if they wish. Officials say it isn’t known when the center will close for good.
