Cases of COVID-19 are on the increase statewide and area hospitals are seeing a few more patients with the coronavirus. However, Dr. Derek Feuquay, chief medical officer at Flagstaff Medical Center says he is more confident that current treatments of COVID-19 are making more of a difference now than back in March. He says; “earlier on in the pandemic I think we were seeing a lot of patients come from the reservation with a lot of medical issues, that’s why we were seeing a lot of deaths in elderly patients, especially in diabetics and obese patients.” He adds, “that’s still happening but we aren’t seeing deaths as much and I think a lot of that is because we’ve become better in treating this.” He mentions steroid treatments and Remdesivir as successful drug treatments in dealing with the virus, as well as non-medical treatments such as rolling people over on their stomachs to help them breathe easier. In recent cases treated at FMC, about two-thirds have come from the Flagstaff area. Officials say they hope with the rise in cases, the community will be proactive and take the precautions more seriously. As of Wednesday, Flagstaff Medical Center has 13 COVID-positive cases, with two in ICU.
