The Arizona Interscholastic Association Executive Board has reversed Friday’s decision to cancel winter sports and will proceed with basketball, wrestling and soccer. Friday’s vote was 5-4 to cancel winter sports due to the rise in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in the state. Before Tuesday’s vote, AIA executive director David Hines said members of the board have been harassed and threatened since Friday’s vote. Tuesday’s vote was 5-4 to reverse the decision. Jim Love, board representative from the Arizona School Board Association changed his vote from “no” Friday to “yes’ Tuesday. Games will be played with the added element that student athletes must wear masks on and off the court and field. Hines says not wearing a mask is “not an option.” He adds, “if you can’t wear a mask while playing, I’m sorry, you won’t be allowed to play in the AIA this year.” Two parents or guardians per player will be permitted to home games, if local guidelines are met to allow them at the events. Flagstaff Unified School District Governing Board decided Tuesday not to allow any fans at games at this time. Games begin on February 18th.
