A single-vehicle accident near Prescott has claimed the life of an 18-year-old driver. Yavapai County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene on Williamson Valley Road at around 1:30 a.m. Saturday just outside of the city. Officials say a red Saturn station wagon left the road and came to rest in a ditch. The driver, Caitlyn Smiddy from Upland, California, was ejected and suffered fatal injuries when the vehicle landed on her. Following the accident, friends of the occupants got them to safety and tried to lift the car off Smiddy, but were unsuccessful. Witnesses told deputies that before the accident, the Saturn was speeding and had passed another vehicle before going into a skid. The driver reportedly overcorrected and slid off the roadway and into a ditch as it rolled. Investigators are trying to determine if another vehicle played a role in the accident. The accident remains under investigation.
