A 68-year-old man from Pine drowned Monday in Willow Springs Lake outside of Forest Lakes on the Mogollon Rim. Coconino County Sheriff’s officials received a 911 call at around 4:11 p.m. The reporting party had been fishing at the lake with his family when he heard a person yelling for help. They saw a man in the water struggling. A member of the party swam to the man and was able to get a hold of him and pull him part of the way back to shore, but the victim’s body went limp. They were unable to pull him to shore as he slipped underwater. Initial searches didn’t come up with the body, but a team from the Gila County Sheriff’s Office found him at around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. The victim was 68-year-old Danny Boyd, who was at the lake fishing with his family. Boyd wanted to go out on his boat one last time before leaving the lake. There’s no word on how he ended up in the water, but his boat was located submerged in the area. He was not wearing a life preserver at the time of the accident. Boyd’s body was taken to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office where an autopsy will be performed.
